Student Support

At our medical school, we are dedicated to not only advancing medical knowledge and clinical skills but also to supporting the holistic development of our students. By contributing to our funding initiatives, donors play a critical role in enhancing various aspects of our students’ educational and personal journeys. Your generous donations can provide scholarships to deserving students, bolster vital counseling services, alleviate food insufficiency, and enrich our Humanities in Medicine Series. Additionally, contributions help expand access to professional resources like the American Medical Association, support student well-being, enhance student life, improve academic accommodations, and sustain the activities of registered student organizations. Each gift, no matter the size, helps us build a more supportive, enriching, and inclusive environment where future medical professionals can thrive.

Here is how you can contribute:

CUSM gives special preference in admissions to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Over 60% of our students receive funding from student loans. Nationally, the mean education debt for a medical student in 2023 was over $200,000 dollars. 20% of all graduating medical students graduate with over $300,000 in debt. Unfortunately, students with significant debt may move away from practicing in Primary Care specialties, which pay significantly less than more specialized services.

Your gift will make it easier for students to practice in front-line specialties and serve underserved populations without fear of being able to pay off their student loans.

  • Every dollar makes a difference. No matter what you give, it will help!
  • A gift of $70,200 will provide a full-ride scholarship for one year of medical education.
  • A transformational gift of $280,800 will provide a fortunate student with a four-year, full-ride scholarship.

Your support can transform lives and improve healthcare for those who need it most.

Supporting university student counseling services is vital to the well-being and success of our students. In today's fast-paced and often stressful academic environment, mental health challenges are increasingly common, affecting students' ability to thrive academically, socially, and personally. By funding counseling services, you are ensuring that students have access to the professional support they need to navigate these challenges, build resilience, and achieve their full potential. Your generosity helps create a healthier campus community, where every student has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of the obstacles they face. Investing in student counseling is not just an investment in individual lives—it's an investment in the future leaders, innovators, and changemakers of our society.

The following is the support requested:

Mental Health and Counseling Services: $50,000 - $100,000 to expand counseling services, hire additional counselors, and provide mental health workshops.

Academic Support: $30,000 - $60,000 to fund academic tutoring programs, resources, and academic workshops.

Challenge: Combatting Food Insecurity Among Medical Students

Objective: To Eradicate Hunger and Improve Nutrition

At CUSM, our commitment extends beyond education. We strive to support our students in every aspect of their journey, recognizing a significant challenge: many face food insecurity while balancing the rigorous demands of medical school. These are the very individuals dedicated to serving and improving our community's health in the future.

As a pillar of support and hope within the Inland Empire, CUSM not only educates but also prepares medical professionals who will address the needs of underserved populations locally and beyond. Our proactive approach includes not just addressing academic excellence but also ensuring that every student has access to nutritious food—a basic but vital aspect of their overall health and success.

The Department of Counseling and Wellness at CUSM is committed to the well-being of our students. It ensures that these future doctors can navigate and excel beyond challenges such as mental health, high stress, and high academic demands.

The Personal, Academic, and Career Excellence Program (PACE) program at our medical school is dedicated to supporting MD students during the critical clerkship phase by providing comprehensive advising and support services aimed at fostering personal, academic, and career success. Recognizing the intense demands of medical training, which can lead to burnout and isolation, PACE is excited to introduce the "Humanities in Medicine" series. This innovative program will engage the entire CUSM community, with a strong focus on student involvement.

The "Humanities in Medicine" series will offer a diverse range of activities, including art, music, literature, drama, writing, philosophy, and history, facilitated by community experts and contributors. The funding will be allocated for necessary supplies and honoraria for speakers.

We invite philanthropic partners to consider a pivotal contribution of $20,000, which will fund the essentials such as speaker fees, supplies, and refreshments for each event. This support ensures that our students not only have the resources to engage fully in these enriching activities but also helps in cultivating a well-rounded medical community.

The Personal, Academic, and Career Excellence (PACE) Program at California University of Science and Medicine (CUSM) is dedicated to supporting MD students during their clerkship phases. Our mission is aligned with the needs of those committed to serving California’s underserved populations in the Inland Empire.

Recognizing the diverse challenges faced by our students, PACE ensures equitable support through comprehensive services, including personal counseling, academic aid, and career planning. We understand that access to essential third-party tools and resources often presents financial hurdles.

To enhance our support, PACE proposes providing a four-year AMA membership to all MD students. This membership enriches our students’ educational journeys by offering:

  • Over 1,000 leadership and training opportunities crucial for residency applications.
  • Comprehensive resources for the residency Match process.
  • Access to the JAMA Network™ and USMLE® test preparation materials.
  • Networking and advocacy tools to effectively explore and compare residency programs.
  • Opportunities to influence health policy through active engagement.

With these resources, students can streamline their search and preparation for residency placements, reducing the time spent on logistical tasks and focusing more on their professional development.

Funding Needs

This initiative requires funding to cover the costs of AMA memberships for our students, ensuring that no student is left without crucial resources due to financial constraints. The cost structure is as follows:

  • Class of 2028: 130 students @ $68 for 4-year membership = $8,840
  • Class of 2027: 130 students @ $54 for 3-year membership = $7,020
  • Class of 2026: 130 students @ $38 for 2-year membership = $4,940
  • Class of 2025: 130 students @ $20 for 1-year membership = $2,600
  • Total Funding Request: $23,400
