For faculty with a CUSM employment contract, your faculty appointment will align with the contract period. For all other faculty, your appointment is granted for three years with the possibility of renewal. From our Guidelines on Faculty Appointment and Promotion: To be eligible for renewal (new 3-year period), faculty members must have engaged in a CUSM faculty activity during their appointment period, and there are continued plans for annual engagement. Faculty activities include teaching/advising CUSM students, conducting research with CUSM students, and providing services that benefit the CUSM community. You will receive a request from the Faculty Affairs Office to give an update on your faculty activities when your renewal date comes up.
From our Guidelines on Faculty Appointment and Promotion, faculty members should ordinarily have completed at least five years at the current rank to be eligible for promotion, although early promotion may be considered. There is no automatic promotion based solely on years of rank. If you are interested in working towards applying for promotion, please get in touch with Linda Connelly, Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs, at Linda.Connelly@cusm.edu.
The promotion process for faculty at CUSM typically opens with an information session in early August and involves workshops through October and November to assist faculty in completing their applications. The process closes with the submission of finalized promotion applications in early December, followed by reviews and final decisions by May of the following year. If you are interested in working towards applying for promotion, please get in touch with Linda Connelly, Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs, at Linda.Connelly@cusm.edu.
You can contact the Faculty Affairs office any time for more information on Committee service. Calls for nominations are sent out in early Spring, and elections to confirm new members are held in April. Committee appointments are for three years. Most Committees hold meetings online or in a hybrid format to allow for off-site participation.
The Office of Faculty Affairs oversees the annual faculty award process. Nominations are solicited from faculty and students early in the Spring semester – categories include teaching (both pre-clinical and clinical), research, and service. A nominating committee, composed of the previous year's award recipients, reviews nominations and votes to select award winners. Faculty Awards are presented at the annual Spring Faculty Celebration lunch held at the beginning of May.
