The Office of Faculty Affairs provides guidance and support to faculty in working toward promotion. We encourage all faculty to familiarize themselves with the promotion process as early as possible in their appointment. Note that the specific personal timeline for each faculty for promotion should be discussed with the Dept Chair for Medical Education.

Step 1: Review the promotion resources below to familiarize yourself with the process.

 

Step 2: Work with the Medical Education Department Chair/Office of Faculty Affairs to determine your personal plans in alignment with the CUSM promotion timeline.

 

Typical CUSM promotion timeline 
Date Action
During August Faculty Affairs/Rank and Promotion Committee Chair -hold general information session on the Promotion process – open to all faculty (email notification/invite)
August/September Faculty interested in promotion discuss their situation with Medical Education Dept Chair and Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs
October and November Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development assist faculty in completing their application
First Monday in November Candidates for Professor submit list of external reviewers to Department Chair
First Monday in December

Promotion application sent to Chair for review

Chair solicits Internal and External Review Letters (external letters required for Associate to Professor only)

End of 3rd week of January

Faculty member completes any final minor edits/updates and submits all required promotion documents to Medical Education Department

First Monday in February Completed applications submitted from Department Chair to Faculty Affairs for distribution to Rank and Promotion Committee
March and April Review of promotion applications by Rank and Promotion Committee
April 31st Submission of appeals
May Consideration of appeals, additional application review if necessary
