CUSM MD students are invited to participate in one of our longitudinal, co-curricular Scholars Programs. These programs are designed to help students explore their professional identity, focus on areas of interest in healthcare, and enhance their academic skills to further their professional development. CUSM offers multiple programs that provide students with opportunities to take advantage of CUSM’s faculty, their knowledge, and unique areas of expertise that extend beyond our core MD curriculum.

Scholars Programs are optional. Students have the opportunity to apply to a Scholars Program during their M1 year.

  • During the program, students will:
    • Learn how to conduct research and scholarly projects.
    • Improve their critical thinking and analytical skills to solve clinical and research problems.
    • Explore their academic interests to build professional identity and augment the core curriculum.
    • Generate scholarly results including designing and delivering research projects, publication bylines, applying for fellowships, and other achievements that will enrich students’ academic credentials and enhance their applications for residency programs.
    • Increase competency, knowledge, skills, and competitiveness for residency and future clinical practice.

CUSM believes in the art and science of medicine. Participating in a Scholars Program enhances a student’s perspective of medical knowledge, the essential role of research and scholarly activity, and how they interact with successful clinical and research professionals. Upon successful completion of their program projects, students will be recognized with institutional distinction as an MD Scholar prior to their residency application in the M4 year. This honor will be included in their Medical Student Performance Evaluation (Dean’s Letter), further enhancing their residency application.
